Laparoscopy, or laparoscopic surgery, is a way of performing surgical operations without a long incision. Instead, a surgeon makes a few punctures in the abdomen with long, fine, delicate instruments. A tiny videocamera is inserted through one of the punctures, and the operation is watched by the surgeons and his/her team on the screen of a monitor. Thanks to laparoscopic technology the operation is thus “minimally invasive”, i.e., the trauma to the tissues and organs is minimal. This could be crucial for an obese patient of poor health. The burgeoning development of bariatric surgery nowadays stems solely from the laparoscopic method.
We use laparoscopy to perform all kinds of bariatric operations, even the most sophisticated, such as gastric bypass.
